Hull is rated in the top 15 city destinations above Cambridge, Oxford, Canterbury and London in The Guardian/Observer Travel Awards. Visitors are coming to Hull from all over the world citing its beauty, shopping facilities, parks and visitor attractions as the main reason for their visit.
Hull is a city that has brought creative talent to the fore. It has a compact Arts sector with huge breadth to it, including arts, galleries, theatre and museums that also offer opportunities for graduates.
As well as expertise in science and technology the University of Hull has an impressive arts legacy too. Philip Larkin, one of Britain’s most distinctive and acclaimed poets of the post-war era, was head librarian at Hull for 30 years until his death in 1985.
Other famous people who found their inspiration at the University of Hull include Oscar winning film director Anthony Minghella, Deputy Prime Minister The RT Hon John Prescott MP and John McCarthy, former Lebanese hostage and journalist. And the University has been able to honour many distinguished people over the years including actresses Maureen Lipman and Dame Judy Dench, Sir Steve Redgrave, Olympic rowing champion and most recently Sir Alec Jeffreys (the man who discovered DNA fingerprinting) and top football referee Pierluigi Collina.
